Sweden’s 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz 5G auction comes to an end raising $277m

The PTS completed the auction of the 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz bands in just one day, which had been delayed due to appeals from Huawei.

An auction pushed back because of legal challenges: On 19 January 2021, the Swedish regulator, the PTS ended the auction of spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz bands after one day and four rounds of bidding. The auction was scheduled to take place in December 2020, but faced delays due to Huawei’s legal challenge to the licence conditions, which prevent operators from using Huawei equipment in these bands.

Who won the spectrum? In the 2.3GHz band, Teracom won all 80MHz for a total of SEK400m ($47.9m). In the 3.5GHz band, Telia won 120MHz for SEK760m ($91m), while Tre and Net4Mobility each obtained 100MHz for SEK491m ($58.8m) and SEK666m ($79.7m) respectively.

A relatively good deal for operators: The price of 3.5GHz licences (0.07 $/MHz/pop) compares well with the amount paid by operators in the UK (0.15 $/MHz/pop) and Germany (0.19 $/MHz/pop) although it is higher than what was paid in Finland (0.04 $/MHz/pop) or the Czech Republic (0.03 $/MHz/pop).
